This cookie is from an 8" thick slide of an old walnut tree that dried out for years and years, slowly cracking and splitting from the stress of the shrinking as the wood fibers retreated from each other as the moisture slowly left the wood. Eventually finding an equilibrium with the world around it, the wood reached its final stable condition with numerous small and larger cracks showing what the years had done to it. We cut the slab in half (we plan on finishing the other half soon) and then flattened it on the top and bottom. And then comes an untold number of hours filling and the cracks with epoxy resin and then more sanding than you can imagine. Through all of this time, we came to know every nook and cranny of this piece and appreciate it even more the more we saw it up close and all of its imperfections. Those imperfections are what make it different from every other table.
